Model description for Chubb Sovereign MK 1:
For over 160 years Chubb have been safeguarding the treasures of the World. 160 years experience, insight and research into defeating the criminal. Todays criminals have at their disposal a formidable armoury of tools and attack-methods. Thermal cutting, explosives, high-speed drills, impact tools and forcing techniques are all readily available as by-products of modern industry. Designed to give superb all-round protection against all forms of attack, the Sovereign incorporates advanced materials and safemaking techniques unique to Chubb.
Research, Development and Testing
Chubb Research Ltd. - an independent company within the Chubb Group - operate what are probably the finest in-house research facilities of any safe manufacturer in the World. Very considerable resources are devoted to a continuing programme of development and testing aimed at producing better barrier materials and better methods of safe construction.
Sovereign Passes the Test
In addition to an exhaustive programme of Chubb testing the Sovereign has been tested, quite independently, in France by Laboratoire du Feu in order that the safe could be rated for insurance purposes by Assemblee Pleniere des Societes d'Assurances. This was a carefully planned, professional attack by skilled technicians, working under ideal conditions, and knowing the exact construction of the safe . . . and it failed to defeat the Sovereign door or body.
During this test the Chubb Sovereign demonstrated exceptional resistance to prolonged combination attacks during which the testers had at their disposal:
- heavy duty oxyacetylene torches, and unlimited gas supplies
- ferrous rods with which to intensify the effects of oxyacetylene attack
- a power drill
- a pneumatic pick
- hammers, chisels and other forcing tools
Having successfully resisted the planned series of official test attacks, the safe was subjected to a set of complementary tests featuring a thermic lance. Again the attacks were determined and prolonged.
SPECIFICATIONS
Door Construction
The door is 7 1/2" (190 mm) thick overall, rectangular, it is constructed from outer and inner steel plates continuous welded and enclosing a solid layer of Chubb copper-alumina material giving a total barrier thickness of 3 1/8" (80 mm).
In certain areas immediately in front of the locks and locking mechanisms extra protection is incorporated to further strengthen the drill-resisting qualities of the door. Extra thermic protection is provided by an infill of carbon-based material over the door face.
Door Locking and Boltwork
Heavy cylindrical sliding bolts, 1 1/2" (38 mm) diameter, extend from all sides of the door into individual bolt-housings deeply recessed into the safe-body. All-round boltwork solidly engaged into the body is an important feature in resisting explosive attacks.
The simultaneous 4-way action of the bolts is controlled by a Chubb Isolator locking unit. This can be secured by any permutation of Chubb Keylocks, Combination locks and Timelocks. When the safe is locked the bolt-throwing mechanism is totally disconnected from the bolt operating handle.
Chubb Isolator Boltwork offers a unique combination of design features, including glass relocking devices and tungsten-carbide drill protection, to ensure the safe remains secured under various types of attack.
The Chubb Sovereign is supplied asstandard fitted with two Chubb 4-wheel keyless combination locks. These provide 100,000,000 changes of code and can, if required, be supplemented by Chubb Time Locks.
Body Construction
By enclosing the 2" (51 mm) monolith of copper-alumina and its attendant infill of carbon-based material within a continuously welded unit of inner and outer steel, a safe body of great strength is produced. The total solid barrier thickness of the body is 3" (76mm).
Finish
The external appearance of the Sovereign has been designed to reflect and underline the inner quality of the unit.
The door is clad overall in fine-grain Stainless Steel, with a full-height satin finish pull handle. The bolt-throwing handwheel is in a matching satin finish as are the combination lock dials, and, if fitted, keylock escutcheons.
The outer body of the safe is painted in a high quality Black Charcoal whilst the interior is finished in a light grey enamel.
Fittings
Chubb Sovereign can be supplied with a full range of shelves, drawers and cupboards. The fittings supports are formed in the sides of the lining, and are so designed so that the fittings can be adjusted at 1 1/16" (27 mm) intervals.
Cupboards and drawers are constructed of sheet steel, suitably reinforced where necessary, and secured by keylock with keys in duplicate.
Cupboards are available 12" (305 mm) or 16" (406 mm), 23" (584 mm) high inside, with the overall width being 1" (25 mm) less than the internal width of the safe and the overall depth being 1" less than the internal depth of the safe.
Drawers are mounted between two shelves secured to the supports by vertical clips. They are supplied either as one full-width drawer or two drawers side by side.
Shelves are of flanged sheet steel, adjustable at 1 1/16" (27 mm) pitch.
